Is it hard to get into the culinary industry? I want to be a chef but my parents are insisting on going to university for 5 years first to get a degree, but I think that by then I will be in my 20s and probably too old to go to culinary school and then start a career. What did you do, and should I follow my parents advice?
It’s not hard to get in at all. Getting experience in your teenage years and then going to a great culinary school is the way that I went about getting in to it. Once you are in you have to work hard to make it and even harder to make it big. It must be something that you absolutely love to do. I’m not going to tell you what to do with your life/career. Just make sure that whatever you do is something that truly interests YOU. Something you love. I hope I was able to answer your question effectively. Good luck to you.
What advice would you give to a young 16 year old who's an aspiring culinary chef?
Get an after school job working with food. Read “On Food and Cooking” by Harold McGee. Go to a good culinary school. Make sure that you truly love this because it’s no joke. Work hard.
